Aluminum extrusion is the metal analogy to thermoplastic extrusion. A billet of aluminum is heated and then placed into a press that consists of a hydraulic ram, a barrel and a die. The hot aluminum is then forced out through the shaped orifice to create a part with a constant profile
.

Process Characteristics
  • Part Cost - low
  • Tooling Cost - low to moderate
  • Production Rate - high
  • AL is lightweight compared to other metals
  • Secondary machining is fairly easy
  • Good tolerance capabilities with aluminum
  • Can approach the tensile strength of steel
  • Accepts a wide variety of finishes
